Water Treatment

Water Treatment > Quality Water Solutions > FAQ > What safety precautions should I take in using alum and PACl?

Alum and PACl are not considered particularly hazardous materials (alum is the major ingredient in styptic pencils and aluminum chlorohydrate, a high-density PACl, is used in deodorants and antiperspirants). The buffered acidic action of these materials, however, can irritate the eyes, skin or mucous membranes. If the eyes or skin are exposed to either one, rinse the affected areas with large amounts of water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists, consult a physician.

Minimize opportunities for contact with good ventilation, housekeeping and personal cleanliness. Use dust masks for comfort and goggles if alum dust is present. Avoid spraying or splashing liquid alum, particularly when it is hot. Wear face masks and protect clothing by using rubber aprons and gloves with waterproof sleeves. Also, have approved safety showers and eyewash stations in the immediate vicinity.

Contain and recover spilled alum or PACl. Do not let either product enter waterways. Neutralize unrecoverable spilled alum or PACl with lime or soda ash, making sure that there is good ventilation while doing so. Consult the appropriate local, state and federal agencies for disposal regulations.
