Characteristics:

Sodium bisulfite is a clear, pale yellow liquid, free of foreign matter, with a strong odor of sulfur dioxide. It is the equivalent of sodium metabisulfite dissolved in water. As such, it is a convenient liquid source of sulfur dioxide, a versatile reducing agent.

Safety:

Sodium bisulfite may irritate the eyes, nose and throat and may cause skin irritation. Ingestion may be harmful. When heated or mixed with acids, toxic sulfur dioxide gas is released which may be harmful or deadly if inhaled. May cause severe allergic reactions in some asthmatics and sulfite sensitive individuals.
